About Leah Persik
LCSW-R — Licensed Clinical Social Worker
I am an experienced therapist with more than twenty-five years in the field. My approach is individually tailored to my client’s needs, primarily utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Techniques and Mindfulness.
What Methods Do You Use?
I use a variety of methods which include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness. I am also trained in a psychodynamic approach which looks to the family of origin, inner conflicts, fear of failure or success, or other tendencies in a person's personality.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a proven type of therapy that examines a person's thoughts about the situation which in turn influence feelings and reactions. For example, we can sometimes be our own worst enemy, thinking in “extremes” or “worst case scenarios”, obsessing about problems, having negative or self- defeating thoughts, and reacting in ways that are not helpful to us. Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can give you the tools to change and get better.
Mindfulness is a way of “staying in the moment.” We will look at your environment to examine external stresses. When appropriate, we may explore how past experiences have influenced your present feelings and behavior.
I believe in a holistic approach which I define as any other methods that can help you reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms. We will explore if you might benefit from meditation, relaxation training, or visualization. Some clients might find regular exercise or a sport helpful, and others would prefer reading, listening to music, or engaging in a favorite hobby. The choice of method doesn’t matter as much as what you will personally connect with and use in your daily life.
My method of therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach. I will tailor my method to your specific issues, your personality style, and your needs.
How Long Does Therapy Last?
There is no set answer to this question. My goal is to understand what brought you to therapy, clarify the things you want to change, and give you the skills to cope, change, and improve your life. It is your choice how long you stay in therapy. When you decide to leave therapy is your choice.
